What Happens During a Foundation Pour? A Step-by-Step Guide

When most people see a completed foundation, they don't realize the amount of planning, preparation, and skilled labor that goes into creating it. Whether it's a new home, garage, addition, apartment building, or commercial structure, every successful project begins with a strong foundation.
At J. Mongillo Concrete Construction, we believe in helping our customers understand the construction process. Here's a step-by-step look at what happens during a typical foundation installation.
Step 1: Site Preparation and Excavation
Before any concrete is placed, the building site must be excavated to the proper depth and dimensions according to the project plans. The excavation contractor prepares the building footprint and ensures the site is ready for foundation work.
At this stage, surveyors establish building corners and elevations to ensure the foundation is placed accurately.
Step 2: Footing Layout
Once the site is prepared, our crew carefully lays out the foundation using the approved plans. Accurate layout is critical because it determines the location of all foundation walls, corners, door openings, and structural elements.
We verify measurements and elevations before moving forward with construction.
Step 3: Forming and Reinforcing the Footings
Forms are installed to create the shape of the concrete footings. Reinforcing steel (rebar) is then placed according to the engineer's specifications.
Footings distribute the weight of the structure and provide a stable base for the foundation walls above.
Step 4: Pouring the Footings
Concrete is delivered to the site and placed into the footing forms. Our crew consolidates and finishes the concrete to ensure proper placement and structural integrity.
After placement, the concrete is allowed to cure and gain strength before wall construction begins.
Step 5: Foundation Wall Forms
Once the footings have cured, foundation wall forms are assembled and installed. Openings for windows, doors, utility penetrations, and bulkhead entrances are incorporated into the formwork.
Wall reinforcement is installed according to project requirements before concrete placement.
Step 6: Pouring the Foundation Walls
Concrete is pumped into the wall forms and carefully consolidated to eliminate voids and ensure a strong, uniform structure.
This phase requires close attention to detail, as proper placement directly impacts the quality and appearance of the finished foundation.
Step 7: Stripping Forms
After the walls have gained sufficient strength, the forms are removed. The newly exposed concrete walls are inspected for quality, alignment, and overall workmanship.
Any necessary touch-up work is completed before proceeding to the next phase.
Step 8: Backfilling and Site Preparation
After inspections are completed and waterproofing has been installed by others (if required), the foundation can be backfilled.
Proper backfilling helps support the foundation and prepares the site for future construction activities.
Step 9: Slab Preparation
Before a concrete slab is poured, the interior area is prepared with compacted gravel, vapor barrier, reinforcement, and any required insulation.
Careful preparation at this stage helps prevent settlement and moisture-related issues later.
Step 10: Pouring the Concrete Slab
The final step is placing the concrete slab. Our crew places, levels, and finishes the concrete to provide a durable surface ready for framing and construction to continue.
Building on a Strong Foundation
Every successful building starts with a properly installed foundation. From footings and foundation walls to slabs and structural concrete, each step plays an important role in the long-term performance of the structure.
