When most people think about a building's foundation, they picture the concrete walls they see sticking out of the ground. However, every strong foundation starts with something even more important: the footings.
While the terms "foundation" and "footings" are often used interchangeably, they serve different purposes and work together to support the structure above.
What Are Footings?
Footings are the first concrete element installed during foundation construction. They are typically wider than the foundation walls and are poured below ground level.
The primary purpose of footings is to distribute the weight of the building over a larger area of soil. This helps prevent settling, shifting, and structural damage over time.
In Connecticut, footings must also extend below the frost line to protect the structure from frost heaving during winter months.

What Is a Foundation?
